A3 Productions was formed in 2003 while Arelys Carballo, Annette Jones, and Amy Savitsky were working toward their Master’s degrees in Visual Media at American University. Their slightly demented interest in the indie film Secretary drew the three women together. While working on a group assignment that profiled the film’s production company, something clicked.
Initially drawn to dramatic narrative, they explored various issues of the human condition; they knew they wanted to touch on something that everyone feels at some point in life. They told each other stories of love, fear, unfulfilled dreams, experiencing life’s milestones and life secrets. However, the topic they each felt most strongly about was betrayal. Meeting after meeting, they found themselves returning to a story Arelys had written that dealt with love and betrayal. Each time the story came up, they tried to talk themselves out of it: “Too many locations,” “It’ll be too difficult,” “We’ll never get an airport.” But the story stuck with them and Toxic was born.
Arelys currently works for E! International as a Program Planner in Los Angeles. She received her Master's Degree in Producing for Film and Video from American University in Washington, DC. Before her move to L.A., she worked for Animal Planet as a Programming Specialist for over three years. Toxic is Arelys's first short film and hopes it won't be her last. She soon made the transition to theater, performing lead roles in a variety of shows including Romeo & Juliet, The Odd Couple, A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream, Closer Than Ever and Me and My Girl. In 1997, she received her bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Virginia. Before the ink on her diploma was dry, she packed her things and headed to sunny California. She was hired as a production assistant at DreamWorks SKG and quickly worked her way up to Story Editor and soon after, made the move to Feature Development. Amy currently resides in Arlington, Virginia and works for the Discovery Health Channel in program development.
